Make the specification usable
State the product's use, material, size, colour and quantity. For electrical items include voltage, plug type and destination requirements. For packaging, identify unit and carton dimensions. If you do not know the exact product name, a clear photo or reference link is a useful starting point.
Separate similar products
Products that look alike may use different materials, components or construction. Request a written specification and ask what can change between a sample and a production order. Compare the same specification across suppliers instead of comparing images alone.
From shortlist to sample
Decide which options deserve a sample and how that sample will be checked. Confirm sample charges, shipping costs and whether any tooling is needed. Keep the approved specification and sample reference in the purchase agreement before moving to production.
